Best RV Weekend Getaways

Summer is fast approaching and we’re all itching to get out and enjoy the outdoors!  There are so many different places to go and see in Missouri that you could spend your whole summer traveling the state.  But if you are just looking for a nice place to visit for a weekend, we’ve got the best places to “get away” to. Check out these top weekend getaways in Missouri for 2017.

Branson, MO

There’s no doubt that Branson is a top tourist destination in Missouri, but there are places you can go and visit that don’t have to deal with the hustle and bustle of the crowded shows and  shopping districts. Hercules Glades Wilderness Area is a beautifully scenic area with the most unique countryside in the Midwest.  There are over 12,000 acres of wilderness to explore; from open grasslands, to wooded forests; rocky hillsides to beautifully flowered landscapes.  There is also a variety of different wildlife roaming the area so chances of encountering turkey, quail, songbirds, lizards and even snakes are very likely. You may even come across an occasional roadrunner or black bear, although these are uncommon.

Activities in Hercules Glades are endless.  Get out and explore the 32 miles of hiking and horseback riding trails that run along open glades, forested ridgetops, and Long Creek.  These trails offer picturesque views of the Ozarks countryside, and a slightly challenging hike for those who like to tackle the different terrain.

Campgrounds in Branson are all over the place, but we would recommend (and so do many others) America’s Best Campground.  They have 136 pull through sites that can accommodate any size RV up to 75 feet, and have full hookups for electric and water.  Each campsite is equipped with BBQ grills and picnic tables. There is a convenience store, car and RV wash, and laundry facilities on site. Campers can also take advantage of their full concierge service that can help you with tickets and activities in case you do decide to travel to the heart of Branson and take in a show.

Lake of the Ozarks

Lake of the Ozarks state park is a wonderful place to spend a weekend away.  It’s the largest state park in the system, and contains a wide array of landscapes. Visitors can explore terrain ranging from majestic cave formations to rugged, wooded areas and over 80 miles of lakefront. There are tons of activities to partake in, including hiking and biking, boating, swimming and fishing.  You can also take a guided lantern light cave tour in the Ozark caverns. 

Camping in Lake of the Ozarks State Park is abundant.  One campground we would recommend is the Shorewood Landing RV Park. The property sits lakefront so you have direct access to the water and marina.  There is a restaurant/bar on site, plus a pool, playground and hot showers for your use.

The campground has 54 full hookup RV sites equipped with cable and Wi-Fi access.  It is also close to area attractions so if you feel like venturing off on your own you won’t have to travel far to see the sights.

Kansas City

Big Lake State Park in northwest Missouri is a beautiful 407 acre park to visit for a weekend getaway.  Nestled within the park is Big Lake, the largest remaining oxbow lake in MO.  Visitors can take advantage of the ample fishing, boating and swimming opportunities.  The shallow waters around the lakes edge create refuge for wetland bird species and migratory waterfowl, perfect for birdwatching and photography.  

The campgrounds at Big Lake State Park have basic and electric campsites.  They also have cabins you can rent out with the basic amenities for your weekend stay. The campgrounds have a day use area with picnic tables, a shelter, grills, and a playground for the kids.  It's  a great park to stay at just outside the city limits.  Experience the beautiful outdoors in Kansas City without having to travel too far from all the action.
